Pollmann to build Plant II in Vitis
Global automotive supplier banks on location with growth opportunities

May 29, 2018. When Pollmann, one of the largest industrial employers in Northern Austria, takes the next step in its expansion strategy, it will be breaking new ground in many ways: Maximum energy efficiency, highest level of automation and a digital twin for the new manufacturing plant in Vitis, where all systems and processes can be visualized and simulated in advance. These are the ingredients for an additional 60 new jobs and a total of EUR 17 million which the company will invest in its future.  But one thing will remain unchanged: Pollmanns commitment to the Northern Waldviertel location and its people.

The global market leader in sunroof kinematics and electromechanical door locks is starting construction of a new manufacturing plant in the Waldviertel community of Vitis. The strong international growth of the company is also reflected in Austria. Here is where we have our roots, here is the foundation for our future, said owner Markus Pollmann during the groundbreaking ceremony for the new plant. He emphasized the close ties to the region: What I love about Waldviertel are its people. Highly trained, loyal employees with sound judgment who do outstanding work which is appreciated by our automotive customers. In 2019, Pollmann is looking to hire 60 new people just for Plant II in Vitis.

Our future at the location. A location with a future.

Pollmann, in its 130th year of existence, is taking the next big step in its expansion program. The production facility will be designed from scratch and built on an as-yet undeveloped site. Pollmann International CEO Herbert Auer is excited: We are building a plant which, in terms of technology, makes two leaps into the future. With Pollmann Austria 2.0, we are moving straight towards Industry 4.0. Our ambition is to have the best, state-of-the-art setup and the most efficient internal logistics system. The fully automated high-bay rack will be a visible part of the building and stand out as the backbone of this production site.

Plant II became necessary because our options for expansion at our headquarters in Karlstein had been exhausted. And we planned ahead right away, says Winfried Rossmann, Managing Director of Pollmann Austria. If our markets continue to perform at such a fast pace, we have a 65,000m2 site ready for modular expansion which we can draw on at any time without interfering with our productivity even for a single day.

Regional Minister for Economic Affairs and Technology Petra Bohuslav: Pollmann has been a major driving force in the Waldviertel region for many decades and reconfirms its role with this milestone project. It highlights the opportunities that open up when we use state-of-the-art technology. Starting now, the entire Lower Austrian digitalization know-how is available to all local companies through the House of Digitalizationproject. The expansion project in Vitis is a perfect example of best practice in action. I wish Pollmann all the best and continued success with the construction of the new manufacturing facility. The owner family has once again shown its commitment to the region and its employees.

Markus Pollmann describes the companys sound growth strategy: Whenever we start a construction project, we have new customers, a new product line, and a new major order already lined up.This is also true of Plant II. Even before construction starts, more than half of the plants capacity has been allocated to orders for producing housings and covers for door lock systems for our major customers Magna, Kiekert and Brose. At maximum expansion, Plant II will run seven days a week in three shifts.

Excavation work will start in the next few weeks. Completion of the construction project is scheduled for spring 2019. At that time, the machines can be set up and test operation can start. The first large-volume series production is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2019. Mr. Christian Zwettler from Pollmann is responsible for construction project management, and construction company Peneder Bau-Elemente GmbH from Linz has been selected as contractor for building planning and construction management.

Our headquarters will continue to be the center for technological developments. Going forward, production in Karlstein will focus on smaller components while Vitis will be configured for the production of larger modules.
