Plastic foaming processes

There are basically two different plastic foaming processes – chemical foaming and physical foaming. Pollmann International has done extensive testing with both systems and decided in favor of physical plastic foaming. All Pollmann plastic foaming processes currently use MuCell or are developed further based on MuCell.

Foaming has many advantages:

  • Reduced cycle time
  • Reduced shrinkage and distortion
  • Avoids sink marks
  • Improved flow properties
  • Lower internal tool pressure
  • Reduced molded parts weight resulting in material savings
  • Increased bending stress – improved fracture behavior
  • Allows foaming of plastics with long-fiber glass

The MuCell® process can be used to foam virtually any thermoplastic material. This process offers many innovation opportunities and can be applied universally. It is particularly well suited for molded parts in the automotive and electrical/electronic industries.

Pollmann International will start using this technology at its locations in the second half of 2013. Our ability to simultaneously produce at several locations means more efficient logistics and reduced labor costs for our existing and prospective customers.
